On a stormy night, Arthur, the second son of the Ross family who has been senseless for five years, is struck by lightning and miraculously regains his senses. He witnesses his fiancée Vera's affair with his elder brother Adrian and discovers that his fall from a horse years ago was actually their conspiracy. Arthur bides his time, secretly planning with the help of his close friend George, gathering evidence and gradually reclaiming the family power Adrian has eroded. At a carefully staged banquet, Arthur publicly exposes the truth of their five-year adultery and murder plot, formally breaks off the engagement, and reports them to the police.
