On her 50th birthday, Evelyn Carter gets her husband Daniel’s confession: he is in love with his young student. Carrying the scars of a past life — where she nursed her paralyzed husband for 15 years, only to be dumped in a run-down nursing home by her ungrateful children and her ashes scattered — she calmly signs the divorce papers and sets them all free. Faced with her children’s bias, cruelty and betrayal, Evelyn cuts all family ties and moves to her brother Vincent’s grand estate to rebuild her life. She takes up photography, travels the world, and launches her own business — reclaiming every joy she denied herself for decades. Daniel is soon paralyzed and stripped of his fortune by his mistress. Her children fall into bankruptcy and disgrace, and Daniel ends up in the very same nursing home, his regret coming far too late. In a quiet coastal town, Evelyn meets George, a man who sees and cherishes her truly. She finally learns: true freedom comes when you set yourself free.
